Key O&M Points for Vacuum Oil Purifier on Insulating Oil Purification in Low-Temperature Conditions

Purifying insulating oil in low-temperature conditions demands a different operating discipline than normal weather. Cold ambient temperature raises the viscosity of insulating oil, so flow slows and pressure drop across the filters climbs, and the vacuum degassing stage becomes less efficient if the oil is too cold. Freezing, condensation and loss of vacuum are additional risks that appear only in cold weather. For maintenance crews working on transformers and oil systems in winter, the reliable operation of the vacuum oil purifier depends on a few key operation and maintenance points that specifically address low temperatures.

The first operation point is proper warm-up before treatment. The oil must be brought to a temperature at which its viscosity allows smooth circulation and effective separation; starting with cold oil forces the pump and overloads the filter elements. Before each run, the operator should verify that the heater and temperature controller are working and allow the unit to raise the oil to the recommended temperature before full treatment begins. This controlled warm-up protects the pump and filters while ensuring the vacuum and filtration stages work at their design efficiency in the cold surroundings.

The second operation point is close monitoring of the process. In cold conditions, temperature, flow and vacuum can drift more than in normal weather, so the operator should watch the gauges during the run. A rising pressure differential across the filters signals loading, while a falling vacuum reading indicates a sealing or pump problem that cold can worsen. Adjusting temperature and flow to keep the oil within the treatment range, without over-heating it, maintains a consistent result. Recording readings at intervals helps the crew tell normal cold-weather variation apart from a developing fault.

On the maintenance side, protection from freezing comes first. Lines, drains, the vacuum chamber and the water-collection sections are vulnerable to ice, which can block passages and damage components. Before a long shutdown in cold weather, the operator should drain collected water and oil from vulnerable parts so that freezing cannot cause damage. Heaters and any trace-heating elements should be checked before the cold season, and the unit should be sheltered where frost is severe. Freeze protection is the most important defense against winter failure for outdoor equipment.

The second maintenance point is control of condensation and cold-weather wear. When warm oil meets cold surfaces, moisture can condense inside the unit and affect electrical and sealing parts, so covers, gaskets and cable entries should be inspected and kept intact. The vacuum system needs particular care, because cold conditions can reduce pump performance and seal effectiveness; checking the vacuum level before use confirms the unit is ready. Keeping spare filters and parts on site before winter avoids delays when a cold-weather treatment is required, and a simple seasonal checklist makes the preparation consistent.

In summary, key operation and maintenance points for a vacuum oil purifier on insulating oil purification in low-temperature conditions are: warming the oil to the correct temperature, monitoring and adjusting the process closely, protecting the unit from freezing, and guarding against condensation and cold-weather wear. Following these points keeps insulating oil purification reliable through the winter and reduces downtime and repair cost in cold regions.
